Genre Research Day 6: Front Cover & Table of Contents Conventions

Today I was looking into at front cover conventions for contemporary and lifestyle magazines. I also reflected on what I wanted my magazine to look like, and how I'd be able to effectively incorporate the proper conventions.

The masthead is always bold, large, and positioned at the top of the cover. It often spans the whole width of the page and is sometimes partially obscured, as presented in this example of 2022 edition Elle. The main cover line is typically the largest text after the masthead and usually tied to the cover star. It is positioned alongside the model but refrains from covering key features.

The cover image is a high quality, full page mid shot or close up of a model. Direct eye contact "the gaze" is very iconic and a typical feature of fashion magazines. Models may also at times be looking partially away from camera. The image also is styled to reflect magazine tone; whether it be glamorous, thought-provoking, etc. The point is for every feature to be intentional. https://www.masteringmedia.net/magazineconventions

The models for contemporary magazines often fit modern beauty standards; but can also be diverse and challenge them; enforcing the "iconic, powerful, future of fashion" vibe that most contemporary magazines reflect.

Color palettes compliment the fashion styling and photography rather than overpowering it. Typography incorporates high contrast, refined typefaces signaling sophistication.

The barcode is placed discreetly (bottom corner) and the issue date and price are kept small and unobtrusive. There is an occasional use of puffs and plugs; or sidebars and small boxes for special features. Luxury fashion covers often communicate cultural commentary *, artistic direction, aspirational lifestyle, and seasonal fashion trends.
Lifestyle magazines * feature more coverlines than pure fashion titles.

* in alignment with my vision for my magazine
